Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) can help people with diabetes better manage their glucose levels. Dexcom’s G7 CGM was just recently approved by the FDA and has a range of features to help people with diabetes better understand their glucose levels. In this blog post, we’ll discuss how to get access to the Dexcom G7 CGM.
Before using a Dexcom G7, it’s important to understand what a CGM is and why it can be beneficial. A CGM is a device that monitors your blood glucose levels in real-time by taking readings from a sensor inserted under your skin. This allows you to see how your glucose levels are changing throughout the day and make changes to your diet or lifestyle accordingly. For a guide on interpreting CGM data, check out our other post on that topic here.
I contend that if you don’t have one already, getting a CGM is the number one best way to improve your glycemic control and reduce your A1C.
How Can I Get It?
According to the Dexcom website, The G7 is easily accessible, regardless of your CGM coverage.
There are two main ways to get access to a G7:
- If you’re new to the Dexcom ecosystem, you can fill out their Getting Started form. Once you complete that, a Dexcom customer service representative will reach out to you and run a benefits coverage check. (Dexcom, of course, want’s you to use one of their CGMs. They’ll do everything they can to make sure that you get one 🙂.)
- If you’re a current user of the G6, “all you need to do is get a prescription from your doctor and continue through the same process. Even if your health plan has not added the Dexcom G7 yet, you can still pick it up now for just $89/month at your local pharmacy. Your normal copay will automatically kick in once your health plan adds Dexcom G7 to their coverage.”
