The Dexcom G7 CGM is the latest generation of Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) available today, and is equipped with the most advanced features. The Omnipod 5 (OP5) is a relatively new insulin pump system that works as a closed-loop with the Dexcom G6. Many OP5 users are wondering, then – is the G7 going to be compatible with the Omnipod 5?
The Details – Dexcom G7 and Omnipod 5
The G7 is available in the US as of February 17th, 2023, and at this time it does not work with the OP5. (Update May 10, 2023: rumors on various diabetes forums indicate that the G7 will be cleared to work with the OP5 around summer 2024.)
The integration of the G7 and the Omnipod 5 insulin pump will require both the approval of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as well as some time for Insulet (the manufacturer of the Omnipod 5) to update its software to accommodate the G7. This means that, while the two devices will eventually be compatible, users of the Omnipod 5 insulin pump will need to continue monitoring their glucose levels with their current device in the meantime.
While this may be inconvenient for users, the long-term benefits of being able to use the two devices together should make up for it. By combining the G7 with the Omnipod 5, users can look forward to an even more streamlined experience managing their diabetes, with the convenience of having all their data in one place. Furthermore, with the integration of the devices, users can benefit from real-time alerts and gain a better understanding of their glucose levels.
Benefits of the G7
The Dexcom G7 CGM boasts many impressive features that make it a great choice for those looking to monitor their glucose levels. It offers a 10-day sensor life (like the G6 before it), allowing users to save time and money by not having to change out their sensors as often. The G7 also offers a smaller and more discreet transmitter and improved accuracy. Additionally, the G7 features real-time glucose alerts, which can be invaluable in helping users to stay on top of their glucose levels. All of these features make the G7 an excellent choice for those looking for an effective and reliable monitoring solution.
Benefits of the Omnipod 5
The Omnipod 5 is a small, discreet device that is easy to wear and comfortable to use. Its intuitive, touch-screen display makes it easy to manage insulin delivery, and the device can be worn for three days at a time (plus an 8 hour grace period). Additionally, the Omnipod 5 is equipped with a Bluetooth-enabled transmitter that allows it to connect with other devices, such as the Dexcom G6, for real-time glucose monitoring. The Omnipod 5 also offers a variety of advanced features, such as remote bolus delivery, and the ability to integrate with other pump-related apps. For these reasons, the Omnipod 5 a great choice for those looking for an intuitive and effective insulin pump.
Connecting the Omnipod 5 to Gluroo for remote monitoring
Although the Omnipod 4 had a rudimentary “View” app (iOS only), the Omnipod 5 still does not have any second screen capabilities to monitor the pump remotely. Gluroo has an experimental (and not yet in coordination with Insulet) integration with the Omnipod 5 system that enables one-way synchronization of the insulin activity entered on a compatible full phone running the Omnipod 5 app connected to an OP5 patch pump. Using this experimental integration means you do not have to “double-enter” boluses both in the Omnipod 5 app and in Gluroo in order to get some of the benefits of Gluroo.
In short, using Gluroo will allow you to see insulin doses from the OP5 on any phone, anywhere.
To do this, simply download Gluroo from the app stores and follow the instructions here: Setting up Gluroo as 2nd Screen for Omnipod 5.
Summary
The Dexcom G7 CGM and Omnipod 5 insulin pump will eventually be compatible, however, it will not be available at the time of the G7’s release on February 17th, 2023. In the meantime, users of the Omnipod 5 will need to continue monitoring their glucose levels with their current device. Once the integration is complete, users can look forward to an even more streamlined experience managing their diabetes, with the convenience of having all their data in one place, as well as real-time alerts and improved accuracy. Gluroo already supports the G7 as a standalone CGM and the OP5 as an insulin pump, so hop in today and worry less about diabetes!
When will DexcomG7 be available to work with Omnipod5.
Thank you for your Help
Hello, The Dexcom G7 lasts for 10 days (not 14 days) just like the G6. Though the G7 offers a 12 hour grace period for one to change it. It will continue to monitor your glucose levels for those 12 hours before it completely expires.
Hey Naomi, thanks for catching that typo. I Just updated the article to correct it! 🙂
Hi, Walker. Another correction is needed in the text…the G6 also has a 10-day life, so the statement that the G7 is “the first with a 10-day life” is incorrect. All the G7 adds is the additional 12-hour replacement window.
Steven, thanks for keeping me honest… Just updated the text. I truly appreciate your help catching these!
I have the G7 and yet to get the pump so when will they be able to work with each other like maybe may 23 or July 6
I don’t know
The OP5 is worn for 3 days (plus an 8 hour “grace” period), and then stops working. Not “ up to seven days at a time”.
Thanks
Hey Brian, thanks for catching that error. I just updated it to reflect the correct info. Cheers!
Link to the rumors?
From the above picture, it appears that the OP5 will be larger once it works with dexcom g7? Is that accurate?
Hey there, good observation 🙂 The image came straight from Insulet’s website, but it looks like it has since been taken down / modified. I would guess that the size will not change at all, and that the image was just poorly designed. At this point it is all speculation though.
When will the dexcom g7 be compatible with the omnipod
Hi Ryan, we don’t know when – the integration is currently in development. We can speculate that it will be sometime in 2024 though 🙂
